A global leader in rail technology turned to INTEG for a way to achieve remote, continuous radio coverage and central monitoring of its radio system.
The JNIOR Ethernet controller was easily integrated into the company’s radio control system. Now, instead of sending a technician out to a box whenever rebooting or reprogramming is necessary, these functions can be handled with the push of a button from the central control office. The company says this solution not only saves time, but enhances safety, too.
A leading supplier of environmental monitoring instrumentation used for the detection, measurement and reporting of air pollutants was looking for a cost-effective means of data acquisition. But savings wasn’t the only concern. The solution they chose would also need to allow them to meet stringent government compliance standards. The JNIOR logic controller system met both criteria, so the company integrated it into their environmental monitoring station.
For data acquisition, the JNIOR logic controller system gathers analog signal data and buffers it before sending it to a PC-based application via the Ethernet using the Modbus protocol. This instrumentation is used to meet source emission monitoring requirements and the ambient air quality monitoring needs of regional governing authorities.
The company reports that the JNIOR system was just one-tenth the cost of its previous PLC-based solution – and it has proven much easier to use. The savings were so significant that the company was in turn able to lower its own fees and compete in markets it couldn’t enter before.
A college in Maryland wanted to accurately monitor its utility usage in a new building so meaningful consumption trends could be identified. The JNIOR was integrated into its building management system to monitor gas, water and electric meters.
Each utility meter is wired to one JNIOR controller device. The JNIOR system charts the flow instantaneously and reports total consumption on an hourly, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. The data can be viewed anytime, anywhere from a web page.
The college now has information about peak usage times that can be used to plan more efficient consumption. In addition, all of the summarized data can be saved and stored permanently offline.
The college is also monitoring water pressure throughout their newest building which is now the tallest building on their campus. They wanted to be sure there is always sufficient water pressure for the sprinkler system on the top floor and throughout the building. The college intends to eventually sub-meter all the other buildings.

A medical systems manufacturer wanted to find a way to make real-time production information available to its Manufacturing Execution System (MES). Like most manufacturers, this customer had been relying on operators to key in data from the machines. Thus, there was a delay of hours or even days before the data reached the MES. In addition, there was the likelihood of keystroke errors.
Each JNIOR now serves as an interface with an individual machine on the shop floor. Cycle data is buffered using Data Buffer software. Then the JNIOR sends the data via Ethernet to a central SQL database, where it is consolidated with data from other JNIORs using the Data Collector software. Next, the Plume software summarizes the JNIOR data by machine and data type, formats the data to a predefined XML message and seamlessly sends the XML via Ethernet to the MES.
The Plume software flags this data as being processed to the MES to ensure data continuity and integrity in the decoupled systems. The SQL database retains the actual JNIOR data for historical reporting and analysis.
The MES then calculates production-related metrics from the cycle data generated by the machines, including performance to standard, part production, material consumption and overall equipment utilization.
The manufacturer has found that the JNIOR system offers an MES / ERP integration solution that is missing from higher-level applications. And, in bypassing human operators, total accuracy is achieved – in mere seconds, not hours or days.
