Optimization Models

Helping steel companies optimize their operations

INTEG has developed and implemented computer models for the steel industry that help users optimize and integrate their operations.  By bringing the plant floor to the enterprise, steel companies can now effectively improve their process, develop new products and control their costs.

Hot Mill Model Overview

INTEG’s Hot Strip Mill Model (HSMM) is a PC-based off-line model capable of predicting the thermal evolution, deformation behavior, microstructure evolution and final mechanical properties of steel being processed in a hot strip mill. The user can easily set-up their mill configuration, including number of reheat furnaces, roughing mill stands (reversing or continuous), heat retention equipment, finishing mill stands (tandem or Steckel), run out table cooling system and mill exit area. The model can handle both strip and plate products. A variety of steel grades can be modeled.

The HSMM uses a series of physical models to calculate both thermal mechanical and microstructure evolution. The model can be run in both single node and multiple node modes and offers a selection of modeling methods to be utilized for flow stress calculations in the roll bite. While calculating the final temperature run down for the run out table and coiler or cooling bed, the phase transformation (austenite to ferrite, pearlite, martensite, bainite), and final mechanical properties including Yield Strength (YS), Tensile Strength (TS) and elongation are determined. The microstructure model calculates recrystallization, austenite grain growth, precipitation and phase transformation.

The HSMM can be used for a variety of applications, including studying mill configurations, designing rolling schedules, developing new products and to gain detailed insight into various process parameters not available with normal instrumentation and computer models (such as temperature distribution, temperature rebound, transformation start points, etc.).
