Hot Strip Mill Model Functionality

The INTEG HSMM is a PC-based computer program that performs a variety of calculations to simulate the physical process of rolling steel in a hot mill.  The HSMM allows you to simulate the processing of the steel strip or plate from your reheat furnace dropout to your coiler or cooling bed.  The model’s tracking module tracks the head, middle and tail points along the length of the piece while calculating the temperature evolution, rolling forces, microstructure changes and final mechanical properties.  Set-up information for the rolling schedule can be manually entered or imported via a database link to your mill database.  Calculated results are presented to you in the form of tables, graphs, and exported files for loading into Microsoft Excel.

The HSMM is powerful with many features, yet easy to use with the ability to segment and control the amount of information and set-up required.  The following provides an overview of the key areas of the model.

  • Calculation Modes
  • Mill Configuration
  • Grade Selection
  • Rolling Schedule
  • Results
  • Grade Builder

When viewing the user interface screen shots below, please note that information in the white boxes with black text is required, information in the yellow boxes is optional and information in the light salmon colored boxes is calculated automatically by the model.

HSMM Demo

Contact Us to set-up a 60-minute web demo and to qualify to receive a 30-day full functioning copy of the HSMM.

Model Modes

The HSMM operates in two independent modes.  The Single Node mode views the steel as one, average through thickness node and the Multiple Node mode views the steel as 101 nodes through thickness.  The Single Node model executes in 3 to 5 seconds and calculates information on a station by station basis whereas the Multiple Node model executes in 3 to 5 minutes, but provides more detailed information on a time basis.

Mill Configuration

The HSMM is capable of handling almost any combination of hot mills existing in the world today.  Via the user-friendly interface, you can quickly configure your mill configuration and then modify it for future studies of mill upgrades.

Grade Selection

The HSMM is capable of handling a variety of grade families (plain carbon, IF, HSLA, Dual Phase) and even more with its Grade Builder feature.  The user simply enters their chemistry and selects a base grade allowing the HSMM to configure itself automatically for the microstructure calculations.

Rolling Schedule

The HSMM dynamically creates the necessary input fields for you to simulate a rolling schedule based on your mill configuration.  The Rolling Schedule screens allow the user to set their general parameters, pass reduction schedules, rolling speeds, water usage, etc.

Results

The results calculated by the model are displayed for both the Single Node and Multiple Node calculations and can be viewed in tabular form, graphical form, printed reports and for exporting to CSV formatted files for viewing with Microsoft Excel.

Grade Builder

With Grade Builder, the HSMM becomes a very advanced tool providing you with all the flexibility to add your own proprietary algorithms and information to the model.  Now you can select to add or modify equations and adjust coefficients covering many of the microstructure calculations, including the Austenite Processes, Transformation, Mechanical Properties, and Flow Stress.
